General Duty Switches — Up to 100 kA SCCR

Square D™ General duty safety switches are designed for residential and commercial applications where durability and economy are prime considerations. Typical loads are lighting, air conditioning, and appliances.

General Duty Single Throw Safety Switches

240 Volt general duty safety switches are suitable for use as service equipment when equipped with a factory or field-installed neutral assembly or a field-installed service grounding kit, (see Equipment Grounding Kits) as applicable. General duty safety switches are UL Listed, File E2875, and meet or exceed the NEMA Standard KS1.

Selection:

note

NEC 2023 protects against these units from being applied in any application; for compliance with NEC 2023 obtain a Heavy Duty Safety Switch.

The General Duty 240 V Fusible Safety Switches specifications table outlines disconnect switch options used in low-voltage power distribution and motor disconnect applications. It covers 2-wire, 3-wire, and 4-wire configurations with ampere ratings ranging from 30 A to 800 A. The table lists enclosure types, catalog numbers, fuse compatibility, and horsepower ratings for various motor loads. Supported fuse classes include Class R, J, and L, with some models supplied factory-fused or requiring field installation. The specification also identifies UL-listed maximum short-circuit current ratings up to 100 kA, depending on the fuse class used. This reference is intended for electrical engineers, contractors, and facility managers selecting NEC- and UL-compliant disconnect switches for commercial, industrial, and utility applications.

note

Class R fuses are rated for 100 kA, however without the rejection fuse clips, the system is limited to 10 kA since Class H or K fused could be installed in the future.

Safety Switch

The General Duty 240 V Non-Fusible Safety Switches specification table outlines disconnect switch options for 240 Vac electrical distribution systems in commercial and industrial applications. The document covers 2-wire (2-blade) and 3-wire (3-blade) configurations with current ratings from 30 A to 600 A and lists corresponding NEMA Type 1 and NEMA Type 3R catalog numbers. Included specifications identify available accessories such as equipment ground kits, neutral kits, line-side barriers, and factory-installed provisions. Horsepower ratings are provided for single-phase and three-phase motor loads, supporting motor disconnect and isolation requirements. The table also details UL-listed short-circuit current ratings (SCCR) ranging from 10 kA to 100 kA, based on the upstream circuit breaker or fuse class used. These non-fusible safety switches are designed for equipment isolation, maintenance disconnects, motor control applications, and NEC- and UL-compliant electrical installations requiring reliable overcurrent protection through separate upstream protective devices.
